"Soft Matter: what it is and why do we care?"

Soft Matter has been with us since the beginning of life as we know it today. In this talk I will provide an informal historic perspective into what we call soft matter. I will draw examples and highlight some of the recent advances in this area from my group and others. In particular, I will introduce the concept of (self-)assembled materials and active soft matter to exemplify how we can exploit the behavior of such systems to advance our understanding of nature as well as increase our technological prowess to benefit society.
