Four College of Engineering graduate students, two from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and two from the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department, have been awarded prestigious fellowships from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). The MIE fellowship recipients are Bridget Benner and Jacob Davis, while the ChE recipients are Becca Huber and Stephanie Call.
Michael A. Henson
Michael A. Henson has been appointed interim head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, effective May 24. He will replace current head, John Klier, who is stepping down to transition into the role of dean of the Gallogly College of Engineering at the University of Oklahoma.
Amity Lee, office manager & assistant to the department head in chemical engineering, is the recipient of this year’s Dean’s Service Award.
Govind Srimathveeravalli
Assistant Professor Govind Srimathveeravalli of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department has received a $603,550 grant from the Department of Defense (DoD) to study how to redeploy macrophages to effect sustained and robust anti-tumor response in patients with bladder cancer. The project’s co-principal investigator is Ashish Kulkarni of the Chemical Engineering Department.
Butler, Schiffman, Perry
The STEM Women’s Interdisciplinary Group, containing three College of Engineering Faculty members, has received one of the four new mutual mentoring grants, funded for up to $6,000 a year, by the UMass ADVANCE team. Among other UMass faculty, the STEM Women’s Interdisciplinary Group includes Dr. Caitlyn Butler of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department and Dr. Sarah Perry and Dr. Jessica Schiffman of the Chemical Engineering Department.

The College of Engineering has selected Professor Jonathan P. Rothstein of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and Assistant Professor Jungwoo Lee of the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department to receive the college’s outstanding faculty awards for 2020. As determined by a faculty review committee, Rothstein won the Outstanding Senior Faculty Award, while Lee earned the Barbara H. and Joseph I. Goldstein Outstanding Junior Faculty Award.

Senior Madeline Scott of the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) Department and senior Elizabeth Voke of the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department and Commonwealth Honors College were two of the eight “Rising Researchers” from across the UMass campus who were honored in the spring semester for excelling “in research, scholarship and creative activity.”
Sanket Sabnis
Sanket Sabnis, a fifth-year doctoral student in Professor Wei Fan’s research group within the Chemical Engineering (ChE) Department, has won the 2020 College of Engineering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award. As Sabnis has said, “I am from Mumbai, India, and I identify as a gay man.” In that context, as ChE Department Head John Klier wrote while nominating Sabnis for the award, “Sanket has made tremendous efforts and impact in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in our department, the college, the university, and beyond.”

An interdisciplinary collaboration among Wei Fan of the Chemical Engineering Department, Principal Investigator Scott Auerbach of the Chemistry Department, and other UMass researchers promises to advance our understanding of zeolite catalyst structure and lead to new materials for clean energy and carbon capture, among other applications.
