Amity Lee, office manager & assistant to the department head in chemical engineering, is the recipient of this year’s Dean’s Service Award (2020).
Nominators noted her ability to see a need and take initiative to implement solutions, as well as her professionalism and positive attitude even during challenging situations. John Klier, department head in chemical engineering, highlighted her resourcefulness in orchestrating four simultaneous faculty searches in support of the department’s strategic hiring plan - coordinating with faculty, staff, candidates and university administration to streamline the process. In their recommendation, the selection committee noted Amity’s longstanding dedication to students, faculty, and staff within the College of Engineering, consistently going above and beyond what is required.
Another example of rising to the challenge, Amity worked very closely with American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) undergraduates to host their 2019 Northeast Regional Conference on the UMass Amherst campus. With ~100 undergraduate attendees, Amity ensured that all of the requisite logistics were in place for a highly successful event. Amity was also cited for her efforts as a member of the department’s communications team, taking the lead on managing the chemical engineering website, newsletter, and social media feeds. Her efforts and creativity greatly enhance the department’s visibility and fundraising efforts.
One nominator aptly stated “Amity is a truly exceptional staff member, a true gem in terms of character, office management skill, professional conduct, and enabling implementation of strategy, and she has served the entire departmental community – faculty, students, and staff – well beyond the call of duty.”
Congratulations, Amity on this well-deserved award. (May 2020)
