Marvin O. Schlanger ‘72MS & Eva (Listman) Schlanger ‘70MA recently directed a generous gift from the Schlanger Family Foundation to the UMass Amherst College of Engineering, extending their support for assistant professor Lauren Andrews, the Marvin and Eva Schlanger Faculty Fellow in Chemical Engineering.
When asked why they are so committed to UMass Amherst, Eva responded, “Marv and I received our entire education from the public system: primary, secondary, university and graduate. It is important to us to help secure that same opportunity for future generations.” Marv added, “We were very impressed with the world-class, cutting-edge biochemical technologies being developed in Professor Andrews’ lab. We are honored to have the opportunity to potentially impact the future health of society.”
Sanjay Raman, dean of the College of Engineering, expressed his deep gratitude for Marv and Eva’s investment, saying, “Their generosity to our Department of Chemical Engineering helps fuel research discoveries and ensures that the next generation of students will continue to benefit from exceptional teaching and mentorship provided by rising star faculty—such as Lauren Andrews, and her revolutionary work in the area of synthetic biology and genome engineering.”
The Andrews Lab aims to uncover genetic design rules to reprogram regulation and metabolism in living cells for applications in health and biotechnology.
